SAARC SUMMIT 2010

It has been almost 25 years that SAARC trade block was established by seven founding members namely Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Srilanka. Now the strengths of member countries rose to eight by entry of Afghanis in 14th summit. Bhutan is having the privilege to host it first time. The block have has been formed to promote economic growth and welfare of the people and the other areas of regional cooperation among member nations.

SAARC as a block has been a failure despite constituting population of more than billion as in other parts of the world regional cooperation in the forms of trade blocks have been one of the fastest way of developing the regions
The major obstacle is rollercoaster relationship between India and Pakistan which led to unable to achieve the objective of South Asian Free Trade area (SAFTA).The trust of the government of the member nations among each other have not been good.

The member states have to understand how India one of the fastest growing economy in the world can play a dominant role in meeting the goals of the association. It is India’s interest too that if it wishes to become a power in the world it has to have a close and cordial relationship with its neighbors’ but the member countries having a fear of India increasing close relationship with west.

Indian prime minister,Dr.Manmohan Singh in the last summit has proposed to set up SAARC university at New Delhi which is a great idea of increasing the opportunities for the students of these nations to go for education and share the cultural differences.

This year summit is to set the modalities of increasing the cooperation among the member countries in the field of Climate Change, terrorism and increasing the cooperation in the areas of mutual cooperation.

It is the time for member nations to go for better coordination and make it a history by setting the modalities for saving the life of people and don’t let the future generations ponder over why this block failed to meets its objectives despite having a region with abundance of natural and manpower resources.
